Roof Leaks!!
Much of Des’s artwork used humour to raise spirits and improve morale.
Here we see the portrayal of a leaky roof – sunlight coming in through a hole. As if such a minor irritation would figure in the serious day-to-day problems of the POWs clinging onto life while being worked & starved to death.
It is interesting to study the detail of the everyday objects of the POW, objects stored under the bunks, homemade clogs as footwear, a pipe on the footstool and a hat hanging up.
The idea is a typical example of Des’ sense of humour .
From memory Des family recall him indicating that this fellow complaining was an officer, expecting one of the NCO’s to ‘fix’ the problem.
